The Best Apps for Managing a Chronic Condition

As patients navigate the day-to-day of chronic disease management, it can be difficult to track medication, manage symptoms, and receive the support they need to live a healthy and fulfilled life. Fortunately, several companies took note and introduced apps to help patients understand, manage and provide insights into their condition.

Gali Health

Gali Health bills itself as “a well-informed friend and AI-powered personal health assistant for your inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) journey.” In addition to curating a variety of IBD-related content such as relevant news stories and Q&As with doctors, the app also provides a place for users to track symptoms by measuring their intensity. Gali Health turns the information into a chartable graph to easily showcase the progression of their symptoms.

The app has great reviews, and it looks like the Gali Health team has taken feedback seriously, changing settings in service of a better user experience.

WebMD

WebMD has several different apps, including specific ones for pregnancy and allergies. However, their general app is the most helpful to people with chronic diseases. Within the widely developed app, there is a symptom checker, enabling users to cross-reference ongoing symptoms against their database. A medication reminder feature provides detailed images of pills, particularly helpful if you’re balancing multiple daily medications.

If you’re searching for a new doctor or pharmacy, WebMD also contains helpful maps and listings by city, state or ZIP. This is a great all-around app, with bountiful information on almost every condition and symptom.

Pack Health

Rather than focusing on tracking individual symptoms, Pack Health encourages individuals to evaluate their overall health from a higher level view. It pairs users with digital health advisors, who provide weekly coaching sessions and content tailored specifically to each user’s needs. The latest version of the app “allows members to view weekly lessons and complete quizzes on the go and also provides access to Pack Health’s complete knowledge library to find articles about their medical condition, health recipes, as well as exercise demonstrations and tips for healthy living.”

AsthmaMD

Created specifically for asthmatics, AsthmaMD makes it easy to log symptoms, triggers and medications on the go. AsthmaMD is most beneficial when used alongside their AsthmaMD Peak Flow Meter (sold in Walgreens and CVS). Paired together, users can easily gauge their lung performance and overall health. The data can then be exported, giving pulmonologists and doctors valuable insight into your condition.

Cardiio

Many people with complex chronic conditions are also advised to keep a watchful eye on their heart health. The Cardiio app uses your phone’s camera light and face-detection technology to read and track your heart rate. In addition to tracking your heart rate, the app also offers personalized high-intensity circuit training exercises, which you can follow if that type of workout fits within your lifestyle.
