New Year’s Resolution Strategy #1: Assess Where You Are
The first step in improving your health is to assess where you are — without judgment. That means being honest with yourself about your current health — whether that’s stepping on the scale or having that blood work done that you’ve been putting off for too long.
Try not to attach emotions to this process. You are simply gathering information. The number on the scale is a data point. Your cholesterol numbers are a data point. If you have a chronic illness, your numbers of flare-ups and functional days are data points. And you can use that data to improve those numbers in 2014.
New Year’s Resolution Strategy #2: Assess Where You Want to Be
Assess what you realistically want your health to look like. Create your healthy image within the framework of your circumstances. If you have a chronic illness, create your ideal image while also taking into account the fact that you will still have to deal with the symptoms — even if you believe you can realistically improve them. We’re not trying to design miracles with this process (though we always welcome them!). We’re trying to create an attainable set of goals to help us live the life we want to live within our circumstances.
