IBD Friendly Super Bowl Recipes

We rounded up our favorite IBD friendly recipes that are perfect for the big game.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Food

If you have an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, food and shared meals can often come with feelings of frustration and anxiety. The Super Bowl is a huge celebration often accompanied with delicious foods, and just because you have a chronic condition doesn’t mean you can’t partake in the fun. Here are some of our favorite Super Bowl classic reworked to not upset your stomach or trigger a flare-up.

1. Pizza

If you love the idea of ordering a pizza for delivery, but are concerned the processed ingredients and grease might trigger your Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis symptoms, opt for homemade, gluten-free bite-sized versions instead with Skinnytaste’s Zucchini Pizza Bites. Play around with this base recipe by adding your favorite pizza toppings (fresh basil, meats, and other veggies) and omit the shredded cheese if you’re sensitive to dairy.

2. Chips and Dip

Chips and queso are a quintessential football viewing fan favorite snack, however, they are not the most ideal choice for those of us avoiding dairy. Leave it up to The Defined Dish to put a healthy spin on a popular restaurant’s queso – made completely without any dairy. This Copycat Dairy-Free Chili’s Queso will have your guests begging for your secret recipe and happily watching the game without stomach aches.

Spinach and artichoke dip is also a crowd pleaser recipe, but the traditional recipe is filled with creamy and heavy dairy products that aren’t super friendly to IBD sufferers. LL Balanced successfully created a delicious version of the cult classic that is entirely vegan. Serve her Vegan Spinach Artichoke Dip with raw veggies or grain-free tortilla chips (we love these.)

3. Chili

Chili is a great Super Bowl serving option as it typically takes minimal prep time and feeds a crowd. The Today Show featured a Lentil Chili that not only takes a total of 25 minutes to prepare and cook, but also is entirely vegan. Set up miniature bowls with extra toppings like jalapeños, sour cream, shredded cheese, chips, and green onions for your guests to round out your healthy and delicious chili bar.

4. Fries

Rather than serving typical greasy fries to your football friends, try these Avocado Fries by Skinnytaste. They are heart healthy, delicious, and easily made in an air fryer or oven. Skip the lime dipping sauce if you’re sensitive to dairy and look for a dairy-free dipping sauce, like Primal Kitchen’s Dairy-Free Ranch.

If you can tolerate frozen french fries, try taking the Vegan Lentil Chili from above and adding it to make Chili “Cheese” Fries. The “cheese” sauce is made from cashews, spices and tomato paste. You might be assigned to bring this recipe to every Super Bowl party for years to come.
