World IBD Day takes place annually on May 19th with the goal of uniting people across the globe in their fight against inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. With Memorial Day right around the corner, what better time to discuss how IBD affects 10 million people worldwide and how to cope at upcoming outdoor social functions.
What is World IBD Day?
World IBD Day exists to encourage those living day in and day out with IBD to build awareness about the severity of these diseases. IBD looks different in each patient and can affect any person from any walk of life.
How do I participate World IBD Day?
Raising awareness about IBD and continuing the conversation about how severely the symptoms can be of living with these diseases is what World IBD Day is all about. World IBD Day has several additional participation suggestions on their website including using the hashtags #makingtheinvisiblevisible and #worldibdday2019 on social media with your story. Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation also has an interactive map you can add your location to and virtually stand in unison with the international IBD community.
What tips can I take away from World IBD Day for the upcoming summer season?
Next week’s Memorial Day holiday kicks off the season of grilling and outdoor gatherings — which can cause anxiety for IBD sufferers. Don’t stress though, take a deep breath and offer to bring a side dish to your next gathering that your body tolerates. It can be difficult to know what ingredients are in other dishes, so always ask. When trying unfamiliar dishes, plan to sick to small portions, and always stay hydrated. Most importantly, enjoy your time spent with friends and family!
