How to Review Your Year in Health

Review Your Year in Health

It’s the time of year when we look back on what we accomplished in the past twelve months as well as ponder what we want to see happen in the year to come.  Read on for our tips on how to review your year in health.

What was your starting point?

Back on Jan. 1, how was your health?  If you have a chronic condition, what was your treatment plan, and how well-controlled were your symptoms? It’s helpful to write this down somewhere as your base point to evaluate and review your year in health.

What were your goals for the year?

Whether or not you set concrete goals, you probably had an idea of where you wanted to be by the end of the year.  Now’s the time to write them down if you hadn’t already. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t meet your health goals completely by the new year. Chronic conditions come with periods of increased symptoms and flare ups as well as periods of remission. Treatment plans can also have setbacks, so don’t feel disappointed or alarmed if your goals weren’t fully met.

Did you face any setbacks?

Take an honest look at any challenges you faced during the year.  How did you respond to them?  Could you have responded more constructively, or did you tackle them with aplomb?  What did you learn from during the process?

What were your year in health achievements?

In what areas did you succeed in health?  Did you improve your cholesterol levels?  Did you find ways to lessen your symptoms?  Did you find a new treatment plan that improved your life?  Maybe you took up a new, active hobby like yoga or daily walking.  Whatever you did to improve your health this year, write it down and be proud of yourself.

Start thinking about goals for the new year.

The overview you’ve just created can help you determine what worked during the current year and what you want to make work better in the next year.  An important part of the chronic condition treatment process is looking at what we can learn from our past and current experiences, or reviewing your year in health.
